UFC San Antonio: Raquel Pennington vs. Irene Aldana
UFC SAN ANTONIO: RAQUEL PENNINGTON VS. IRENE ALDANA – The UFC has targeted a potential bantamweight title-eliminator between Raquel Pennington and Irene Aldana. The fight could be a potential headliner for UFC Fight Night San Antonio on March 25th, 2023.
James Lynch first reported the news and ESPN Deportes later confirmed that the 135-pound fight between two of the world’s top fighters is in the works for the main event. This would be a major fight between two of the world’s best bantamweight fighters.
Pennington (15-9) is ranked second in her weight class, while Aldana (14-6) is ranked fifth. The winner of the match in San Antonio could be seen as the natural challenger to the bantamweight title held by Amanda Nunes (22-5).
This would not be the first time that Pennington and Aldana have faced each other in the octagon. The pair fought back in 2019 in San Antonio. Pennington broke Aldana’s three-fight win streak with a competitive three-round split decision.
Aldana is 4-1 since the loss with two back-to-back technical knockout wins over Yana Kunitskaya and Macy Chiasson. Pennington has put together a string of impressive wins of her own lately. She’s riding a five-fight win streak after her split-decision win over Ketlen Vieira at UFC Vegas 67 (January 14, 2023).
Aldana has been linked to a potential title fight with Nunes for UFC 285, but that fight fell through over a disagreement. It seems that Nunes does not want to take the risk of fighting someone like Aldana, who could be a legitimate challenger to the title.
The word is out on who Nunes will take on as her next opponent.
