The Word

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL RAIDERS AT RAMS PICKS - The Las Vegas Raiders travel to Inglewood to play the reeling Los Angeles Rams to kick off Week 14 of the NFL season. The Raiders are owners of a three game winning streak thanks in part to an offensive resurgence and the incredible play of Davante Adams and Josh Jacobs.

Las Vegas attempts to keep their playoff hopes alive tonight with a win on the road.

The Rams are still missing most of their key playmakers on both sides of the ball and question marks continue to circle the team. Most cappers figured John Wolford would start under center for the Rams, but after Los Angeles claimed Baker Mayfield off waivers, there's a possibility he'll get the start tonight. The Rams are still without Aaron Donald, but the defense fared well against the Seahawks last week.

Can the Rams pull and upset? Will Baker start tonight? Can the Raiders extend the streak? Your Pete Rose Church of the Prophets, Degenerates, and Sickos are here to set you straight.

Some trends to consider:

  • Rams are 2-0 ATS when Stafford doesn't start.
  • Raiders are averaging 125.4 rushing yards per game.
  • Rams are allowing 87,3 rushing yards per game.
  • Raiders are 6-6 ATS this season.
  • Rams are 3-7-2 ATS this season.

Nate's Best Play

This line is gross. The Raiders have been playing better after their debacle in Indy and have won every game since losing to the Jeff Saturday Show.

I have no idea what to think about the Rams. I’d totally given up on them, but they played the Seahawks tough. This isn’t the best analysis, and I would encourage people to watch something else tonight, but this line just seems out of hand.

Rams were frisky against the Seahawks, who are better than the Raiders. There are other factors that made last week’s game close, primarily that it was a divisional game.

Looking at the Rams roster I just don’t see how they can keep competitive with teams.

This is ugly and I hate it but I think the only way to go here is with the Raiders.

John's Best Play

Ever since Derick Carr cried on national TV, the Raiders started winning. He's channeling his inner Dick Vermeil or his outer John Boehner. The Carr public meltdown seems to have shamed this otherwise phony bunch into playing at least a modicum of inspired football.

All of a sudden, after being written off for dead, they are 5-7 and in the playoff hunt. A win tonight over a hapless Rams team who sold their collective soul to the devil for a golden fiddle puts them in position to chase the Jets, Pats and Bolts for Willy-Wonka golden playoff ticket.

The Rams meanwhile are this years version of Daniel Webster, having sold their team's future for one championship. I hope they enjoyed their celebration because they are now years away from being competitive.

With a third-string QB and a coach who has one foot inside the ESPN booth, this Rams team is a tinsel-town bust.

Raiders -7

Jack's Best Play

I have a few pays for this game. I'll start with my big play on the game and outline two props that I'm considering.

I'm happy to see the point total settle at 42. The total opened at 43 and, as the big money came flooding in on the under, the total lost a point. I can see why some of the pros like the over here. The Raiders average 24.3 points per game and the offense is humming. Meanwhile, Vegas ranks 30th in DVOA for pass defense. The game script for Vegas is to outscore the opponent. This bodes well for the over.

My problem with the OVER concerns Josh Jacobs, who is dealing with some injuries. The Rams still rank fifth in DVOA against the rush and the defensive line didn't play too poorly without Aaron Donald last week. The injuries to Jacobs could slow him down on a short week, forcing Derek Carr to rely on Davante Adams to produce.

The Rams don't score much and they shouldn't catch fire here. Yes, yes. The Raiders secondary is bad. But, even if Baker Mayfield starts, can we count on a Kupp-less Rams team to take advantage of the poor secondary?

Neither of these teams play fast, either. The Raiders are 22nd in seconds per play (28.1), while the Rams are 24th (28.99). Take the under at 42.

You may also want to fade Jacobs for rushing yards. The injuries and the Rams defensive line could slow him down and the totals are bound to be high based on his performances as of late. The Rams love running the ball, even tough Cam Akers is 38th in DYAR. Consider Akers +15 carries tonight. Even if the Rams are well behind, they will continue to feed Akers.
