PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania–Â
Bruce Bochy came out of retirement to take what was billed as a new and improved Texas Rangers roster to win a division and finally topple Houston.
Things were going peachy gang-busters until it wasn’t.
All of a sudden, like all the big money teams with over-paid stars who joined their teams for a cash-out payday – they started to lose. And lose. And lose. They went from a six game lead in the AL West to third place and now are at risk of missing the playoffs altogether. They got Mad Max and Jordan Montgomery at the trade deadline but it didn’t matter.
When will these billionaire owners learn that you can’t buy culture in baseball. You have to put a team together – not buy players and insert them in the lineup or on the mound. Like the Yankees, Mets and Padres have learned, money doesn’t buy championships. Committed players do.
The Rangers will soon send Bochy back to the golf course. Maybe he can get a tee-time with Tony La Russa.

Picks For Today, Sept. 2, 2023
Boom Shacka-Lacka! We started off September with a bang! 6-1 and plus +$500! This got our season deficit down to a much more manageable minus -$885. We need a big holiday weekend to get back to the break-even and then go from there!
This is crunch time and we are either going to be the go-to site or sit on the sidelines! So lets rock and roll!
Miami (-110) at Nats
The Marlins have quietly snuck back in the wild card race by beating up on Washington for two weeks. Why stop now? They are only two games back of the Giants, who don’t want to make the playoffs for some reason. I’m going to ride Miami here – Marlins know how to swim in swamps. It’s now or next year for the fish.
Pick: Fish (-110)Â
Rays (-120) at ClevelandÂ
Tampa Bay has overcome a horrific July, losing their ace for the season to Tommy John and losing their All-Star shortstop to a serious police matter. They are only now 1.5 games back of the Orioles who are running into a resurgent D-Backs bunch.
The Rays can be back in first place by Sunday. Cleveland is just a tough bet because their offense is so anemic. Tampa has shown real resiliency under fire. A credit to Kevin Cash. No one wants to meet them in the first round of the playoffs.
Pick: Rays (-120)Â Â
Yanks at Astros (-180)Â
One game is not a predictor. JV had nothing last night and the Bronx-Bummers won a game. Hunter Brown comes back big today and the Astros lineup delivers. Jose Altuve, who exited last night’s game after fouling a ball off his shin, is expected back today. He’s had a torrid August. Luis Severino has been horrific for the Bummers all year.
Pick: Houston (-180)
Twins (+180) at TexasÂ
As crazy as this sounds, Dallas Keuchel got new life with the Twins and pitched five scoreless innings against the Rangers last week. The bottom line here is that Texas is choking like a dead chicken down the stretch, having lost eight of their last 11. I’m going to continue to fade them until they turn it around. Jordan Montgomery is win one, lose one. He’s 8-10 on the season.
Pick: Twinkies (+180)
Pirates (+150) at CardsÂ
I’m telling you, the Pirates are young, loose they are having fun and they know they’ve got something going in the Burgh. Drew Rom, the Cards starter has a 8.00 ERA and I’m getting +150? St. Louis couldn’t give a rats ass about these games. I like a hungry Pirates team with a bunch of kids having fun playing baseball the way it was meant to be. They are fun to watch.
Pick: Bucs (+150)
Toronto (-1.5 runs, -120) at RocksÂ
The Jays are a desperate club right now. They need to sweep Denver to stay relevant. They are 1.5 back in the last wild card slot behind Texas, and only 2.5 behind Houston. It’s bombs away in Colorado!
Pick: Jays (-1.5 runs, -120)Â
Atlanta (EVEN) at DodgersÂ
This has sweep in tinsel-town written all over it. Atlanta has gotten up for these games and they are approaching this series like it means something, which it does not. The Braves are on a mission.
Pick: Atlanta (Even)Â
JF you are as crooked as the Democrats—-Get your ledger straight—-You lost $80 on 8/30.
-$1465 + $500 = down $965 not -$885
