Premier League Picks Matchweek 3: Newcastle United vs Liverpool
Newcastle United (8th) vs Liverpool (5th)
PREMIER LEAGUE PICKS MATCHWEEK 3: NEWCASTLE UNITED VS LIVERPOOL – It’s been a couple of months but Premier League is back and once again it’s time to dive back into Premier League Picks. Tune in this Sunday as Liverpool head out on another road trip to take on Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in what is arguably the most anticipated fixture across Matchweek 3 in the Premier League.
Newcastle United looked incredible in their Premier League opener against Aston Villa, netting 5 goals. However, despite a hard fought match they were brought back to reality by the reigning League champs Manchester City.
Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in their Premier League opener and were able to come back from behind to beat Bournemouth 3-1 in their previous match.

NEWCASTLE UNITED
Newcastle United will be looking to improve on their last outing following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City. In that game Newcastle managed 40% possession with 7 shots on goal. After coming out firing on all cylinders against Aston Villa some thought that Newcastle might be able to take down Manchester City. However, this was not the case. In fact, had Erling Haaland not left his boots in the locker room, this game could’ve been a lot worse.
Newcastle currently sit in 8th place in the table, although early season standings count for very little at this stage, but it has to be noted that Newcastle have now only 1 clean sheet in their last 13 Premier League games. On the flip side, Newcastle have only lost 3 matches at St. James’ Park since the start of the 2022 season. However, 2 of those 3 losses came against Liverpool.
LIVERPOOL
In their last match against Bournemout, Liverpool went down a goal early but were able to bounce back thanks to their front 3, all of which were able to get on the scoresheet. In that match Liverpool managed 65% possession and 26 attempts at goal. For what they’ve lacked on the defensive end of the pitch, they’ve definitely made up for it with their high powered attack.
Liverpool have completely revamped their midfield and new squad member Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have been outstanding thus far. Mac Allister picked up a red card in the previous match against Bournemouth, but Liverpool’s appeal victory will allow him to play against Newcastle.
The only thing that seemed off with Liverpool’s midfield was their lack of a holding midfielder. Well that gap has been filled with the new signing of Wartaru Endo from VfB Stuttgart. I am expecting him to start this weekend against Newcastle and being able to watch what Mac Allister and Szoboszlai can do together in their proper positions should be very exciting.

PROP BETS
| Newcastle Double Chance & Both Teams to Score Yes (-120) |
Newcastle are extremely tough to beat at home but I do think there is a good chance that Liverpool could play out an exciting draw. Both teams have scored in 3 of the last 5 fixtures between these two sides. If Newcastle want to prove that they’re going to be contenders this year and that last year wasn’t an anomoly then they’ll need to make a statement here against Liverpool, something that they haven’t been able to do since 2015.
| Over 2.5 Goals (+160) |
Newcastle have been outstanding at St. James’ Park since the start of 2022 and with a taste for goals after their 5-1 thrashing of Aston Villa, Newcastle can surely expect to find the back of the net against a disjointed Liverpool defense. Opponents have already found the back of the net 4 times this season against Liverpool…luckily for Liverpool fans only 2 of those counted though. Thanks VAR.
However, what Livepool lack defensively, they often make up for it on the opposite end of the field. With Newcastle not really offering goalkeeper Nick Pope much protection as of late, I could also see Liverpool netting a goal or 2.
Alexis Mac Allister will not serve a suspension after a successful appeal against the red card he received during Saturday’s victory over AFC Bournemouth.

TIPS
- Newcastle United will be without Joe Willock, Javier Manquillo, and Emil Krafth while Joelinton remains day to day after being withdrawn early against Manchester City last week.
- Liverpool will be without Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic while Trent Alexander-Arnold is day to day after picking up a knock against Bournemouth last week.
- Liverpool are undefeated in their last 13 Premier League matches.
- Liverpool have won 9 of their last 11 matches against Newcastle United in all competitions.
- Liverpool have kept a clean sheet in their last 3 away matches against Newcastle in all competitions.
THE WORD
The magic number in this match is 13. Newcastle haven’t beaten Liverpool in their previous 13 fixtures and Liverpool are unbeaten in 13 consecutive Premier League matches. I think this will come down to how quickly Liverpool start this game. In their first game they started fast against Chelsea but in their previous game they started poorly against Bournemouth. If Liverpool start the way they did against Bournemouth and allow Newcastle to take the lead, then Newcastle can smother Liverpool all over the pitch and will not lose.
Both teams are solid clubs and both are playing pretty well at the moment. I’m staying on the fence here and expect a cracker of a draw.
