Rookie Sensation

With a new coaching staff and rookie quarterback, not many were expecting the Commanders to lead the NFC East while scoring almost 30 points per game. Rookie sensation Jayden Daniels has full command of this offense with coordinator Kliff Kingsbury calling the plays. Daniels has used his running ability to complement his passing game which makes him difficult to defend. He ranks second out of all active quarterbacks in QBR and his play on film has the Steelers defenders taking notice.

“There’s not a situation he doesn’t like,” said All-Pro defensive tackle Cam Heyward. “He can throw the ball, he can run the ball. He’s dynamic, and he will make you pay if you give him a lane.”

The Steelers have experience and play well against this style of play as Lamar Jackson has a career 2-4 record with four touchdowns and seven interceptions. They used Justin Fields this week on the practice squad to simulate what Daniels may do this week.

The defense for the Steelers has shown some weakness in the last few weeks and will need the offense to keep rolling to win this game. With Russell Wilson the Steelers have been able to move the ball with relative ease but stumble in the red zone. They enter the week with a red zone percentage of 46.43 and that ranks 30th overall in the league. It’s even worse in goal to go situations as they rank dead last. On the flip side, the Commanders’ defense struggles in this area ranking 27th overall in the NFL.  Touchdowns over field goals is the key to victory against this high-flying offense.

The Pick

As a Steelers fan in Commander’s country this game takes on a different meaning. This isn’t the same old defeated Dan Snyder team and fanbase. For the first time since Joe Gibbs (not Gibbs 2.0) there is truly hope and excitement from a franchise that has suffered so much in the last 30 years. With a new ownership group that hired Dan Quinn as head coach and drafted Daniels at quarterback, the future is bright. I think I even saw a Mark “The Ripper” Rypien Halloween costume out amongst the Gen Z’ers this year.

But it’s time for a reality check from your bitter beat writer over here. The last time there was this much excitement was in 1991 when the Washington Redskins last won a championship. It just so happens that I was lucky enough to see this team destroy my Neil O’Donnell led Steelers 41-14, in what was the first NFL game I ever attended. Since then, there has been no love lost when it comes to the Washington Redskins, Football Team, Commanders… whatever you want to call them. It’s time for the Steelers to take over another stadium and prove that there is no way they should have been underdogs today.

I am loading up the Steelers today. Mike Tomlin has won seven straight games after a bye week and is 25-6 against rookie quarterbacks. The Commanders take one on the chin and lose 33-17 today. Let’s hope we have a rematch in February!
