MLB Power Rankings

Rank Team Record Thoughts
1 Philadelphia Phillies

(previously: 1)

38-16 The Phillies and the Yankees are the only teams in the league with a top-five team batting average and earned run average. Until proven otherwise, they are in a class of their own. The Phillies did drop two out of three to the Rockies but swept the Rangers.
2 New York Yankees

(previously: 3)

37-18 Aaron Judge has not cooled off at all. He has gotten better. He is batting .383 in May with 11 home runs and 21 RBIs. The Yankees’ pitching staff has a 2.77 ERA, and Gerrit Cole has begun pitching to live hitters. His timetable to return is as early as late June.
3 Cleveland Guardians

(previously: 6)

36-17 Jose Ramirez is leading the league in RBIs (52) and is off to a fantastic start to the season. His 15 home runs are tied for fourth in the league. The pitching staff has not missed a beat since losing Shane Bieber, with a 3.30 ERA (fourth-best).
4 Baltimore Orioles

(previously: 4)

33-18 The Orioles have the fifth-best ERA in the league, similar to the three teams above them. Pitching is king in this league and translates to wins. John Means and Dean Kremer suffered injuries last week, so we will see how they overcome that.
5 Los Angeles Dodgers

(previously: 2)

33-22 The Dodgers are on a five-game losing skid, including getting swept by the Reds. They have played the Reds seven times in their last 10 games. It is tough to beat a team with that many games in a short time.
6 Kansas City Royals

(previously: 7)

34-20 The Royals are 8-2 in their last 10 games, with the wins coming consecutively, sandwiched between losses. They scored more than five runs in those eight games, paired with their elite starting rotation, which is tough to beat.
7 Atlanta Braves

(previously: 5)

30-20 Ronald Acuna Jr. suffered a complete tear of his left ACL on Sunday and will be out for the remainder of the season. Losing the reigning MVP is a blow to any team, but the Braves won the World Series the last time he tore his ACL.
8 Milwaukee Brewers

(previously: 8)

30-22 The Brewers have an important stretch of games this week. They play a four-game series against the Cubs to open the week. They have a 3.5-game lead on them in the division and could break away slightly with a good series.
9 Minnesota Twins

(previously: 11)

28-24 Byron Buxton is back in the lineup, but Royce Lewis is still completing his rehab assignment. Carlos Correa has been solid after missing a chunk of games in April. Lewis would add some power to this lineup.
10 Chicago Cubs

(previously: 9)

27-26 The bats for the Cubs have been inconsistent at best. The team has a .228 batting average and is in the bottom third of the league in home runs (50). Their starting rotation has been elite, but they need production from their stars.
11 Seattle Mariners

(previously: 10)

28-26 Seattle is in first place, and Julio Rodriguez is not hitting the ball well. If he can turn things around for the second half of the season, they could run away with this division. He has hit a home run in his last two games so it may be happening.
12 San Francisco Giants

(previously: 19)

27-27 The second-biggest movers on this list are 8-2 in their last 10, and 5.5 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West. Matt Chapman started hitting the ball the last two weeks and is making game-saving plays on the field.
13 San Diego Padres

(previously: 14)

28-28 The Padres are right on the cusp of becoming a top-tier team. They have a .255 team batting average and have a fully healthy starting rotation with Joe Musgrove back.
14 Boston Red Sox

(previously: 16)

27-26 Playing in the best division in baseball makes it difficult to get a hot streak going. The Red Sox are 1.5 games back of the Twins for the last wild card spot and have the pitching staff to scare teams in the postseason.
15 Detroit Tigers

(previously: 15)

26-27 The Tigers are 10 games behind the Guardians in the AL Central but only 2.5 games back of the Twins for the last wild card spot. They also have a scary pitching staff that is carrying this team.
16 Tampa Bay Rays

(previously: 13)

26-28 Six-game losing streaks are not a recipe for success in a tough division. They play the A’s to start the week, followed by the Orioles. They have seven games against the Orioles, with two against the Marlins sandwiched between them.
17 St. Louis Cardinals

(previously: 24)

25-26 The Cardinals are the biggest mover on this list this week. They are 8-2 in the last 10 games, including a sweep of the Orioles. It will not get easier this week with the series against the Reds and Phillies.
18 Texas Rangers

(previously: 12)

25-29 I have been giving the Rangers the benefit of the doubt all season, but it is finally time to bump them down. They are 3-7 in their last 10 games and need more production from their stars.
19 Houston Astros

(previously: 18)

24-29 The Astros are hanging in the division race, but going 3-3 against the A’s and Angels does not help. They have a four-game road series against the Mariners that could vault them up the rankings.
20 Arizona Diamondbacks

(previously: 17)

25-28 The Diamondbacks just won a series against the Dodgers but followed it with a series loss to the Marlins. That encompasses the season for Arizona.
21 Pittsburgh Pirates

(previously: 20)

25-29 The Pirates’ pitching staff has been a strength this season. Mitch Keller, Jared Jones, and Paul Skenes have made them a formidable team, but the bats must pick up.
22 Toronto Blue Jays

(previously: 21)

23-29 Toronto could be looking to sell some of their stars at the deadline, especially since they have several players with near-ending contracts. They play in the hardest division in baseball, which could make it easier to sell.
23 Cincinnati Reds

(previously: 23)

23-30 This Reds’ team is young and talented but inconsistent. That has been the theme all season. They lost three out of four against the Dodgers but swept them a week later.
24 Washington Nationals

(previously: 25)

23-28 Things are looking up for the Nationals this season after a disastrous 2023. The pitching staff is young and talented and has some prospects turning heads.
25 New York Mets

(previously: 22)

22-30 The Mets have the talent and ability to compete but keep losing games. When does it become time to sell?
26 Oakland Athletics

(previously: 26)

22-33 The A’s are somehow ranked third in home runs (68) this season but 28th in batting average (.223).
27 Los Angeles Angels

(previously: 27)

20-33 Mike Trout may not return soon, but the Angels’ fans would welcome a quick return.
28 Miami Marlins

(previously: 29)

19-35 The Marlins and Rockies cannot decide who wants to be the second-worst team. I would guess the Marlins are slightly better but had an awful start to the season.
29 Colorado Rockies

(previously: 28)

18-34 The Rockies are still atrocious on the road (7-21), but won a series against the Phillies at Coors Field, so that is something.
30 Chicago White Sox

(previously: 30)

15-39 The White Sox are atrocious and cannot score runs. They are in last with 157, and the team above them (the Cardinals) has 200.
