Thoughts |
1 | Philadelphia Phillies
(previously: 1) |
34-17 | The Phillies own the best record in baseball, and Trea Turner has not played since May 3. They are still top-five in batting average and ERA, and Alec Bohm is batting .330 while leading the league in RBIs (42). |
2 | Los Angeles Dodgers
(previously: 3) |
32-17 | The only other team in the top five in batting average and ERA is the Dodgers. They could be the number-one team, but the Phillies are winning even without Turner.  |
3 | New York Yankees
(previously: 5) |
33-15 | There may not be a hotter hitter in baseball than Aaron Judge. He is batting .386 with seven home runs since the beginning of May. The Yankees also passed the Red Sox for best ERA (2.81) in baseball (without Gerrit Cole). |
4 | Baltimore Orioles
(previously: 2) |
29-15 | The Orioles are very close to the teams above, but the only thing differentiating them is the amount of wins. It is worth noting that Gunnar Henderson is tied for the lead in home runs (15). |
5 | Atlanta Braves
(previously: 4) |
26-16 | The Braves sit five games behind the Phillies in the NL East and have the smallest run differential (+38) of the top-five teams. They need to start scoring more runs and hitting more home runs if they want to catch them. |
6 | Cleveland Guardians
(previously: 6) |
30-17 | Winning five out of six games against the Rangers and Twins is a massive deal, and the Guardians are now in control of the AL Central. |
7 | Kansas City Royals
(previously: 8) |
29-19 | They are right on the Guardians’ heels in the Central. They have an important stretch of games coming up against the Tigers, Rays, and then Twins. |
8 | Milwaukee Brewers
(previously: 10) |
27-19 | The Brewers have two players with a batting average in the top 10 ( William Contreras and Brice Turang) leaguewide. Christian Yelich is also batting .333 but does not qualify because of injury. |
9 | Chicago Cubs
(previously: 9) |
26-22 | Shota Imanaga could not have had a better start to his MLB career. He has a 0.84 ERA through 53.2 innings with 58 strikeouts and a 5-0 record. He is second on DraftKings to win the NL Cy Young Award. |
10 | Seattle Mariners
(previously: 12) |
25-22 | The Mariners have slowly been creeping up the rankings and have finally cracked the top 10. Julio Rodriguez is only batting .274 with 14 RBIs, and they are still atop the AL West. He will get things going soon, and this team will be dangerous. |
11 | Minnesota Twins
(previously: 7) |
24-22 | The Twins are 3-7 in their last 10 and got swept by the Yankees and Guardians this week. They could have dropped lower in these rankings, but they get the benefit of the doubt. Byron Buxton is working his way back into the lineup, and Royce Lewis could be back as early as June. |
12 | Texas Rangers
(previously: 11) |
24-24 | The Rangers have had a rough go lately, dropping their last three series. They will get tested this week traveling to Philadelphia and Minnesota. |
13 | Tampa Bay Rays
(previously: 16) |
25-23 | The stats for the Rays do not raise many eyebrows, but they are winning ball games which is all that matters. They have a -29 run differential, a 4.29 ERA, and a .242 batting average. |
14 | San Diego Padres
(previously: 13) |
24-24 | They got swept by the Rockies last week, which is embarrassing. They followed that up with two wins against the Braves. Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Xander Bogaerts must step it up if they want to go anywhere. |
15 | Detroit Tigers
(previously: 15) |
23-23 | The Tigers rotation has a 3.29 ERA this season and is carrying this ball club. The young bats must start slugging more, but they should improve as the season progresses. |
16 | Boston Red Sox
(previously: 14) |
23-24 | Rafael Devers might be the only player hotter than Aaron Judge right now. He is not having a better month of May but has hit a home run in five consecutive games, but the Red Sox have lost four of those games. They are far back in the division but only 1.5 games back in the wild-card race. |
17 | Arizona Diamondbacks
(previously: 17) |
22-25 | Corbin Carroll is only batting .191 and is holding this lineup from its full potential. He needs to start producing, or the Diamondbacks may not make the playoffs after winning the NL Pennant last season. |
18 | Houston Astros
(previously: 25) |
21-26 | I have been saying that it is not too late for the Astros to turn it around, and they have finally shown signs of life. They are 8-2 in their last 10 and sit four games behind the Mariners in the AL West. |
19 | San Francisco Giants
(previously: 22) |
23-25 | Blake Snell is due back from the IL Wednesday against the Pirates, and hopefully, he returns as his former self and not the pitcher we saw to start the season. |
20 | Pittsburgh Pirates
(previously: 24) |
22-26 | Paul Skenes is incredible! He is only two starts into his career, but he is the real deal. He and Jared Jones have bright futures ahead of them. Jones is averaging 10.7 K/9, and Skenes is averaging 16.2 K/9 in 10 innings. |
21 | Toronto Blue Jays
(previously: 21) |
20-25 | The Blue Jays are in last place in the AL East but are not a team to take lightly. Their bats have not been impressive this season, but they have the talent to get hot any moment. |
22 | New York Mets
(previously: 18) |
21-25 | Edwin Diaz had a tough week, and his ERA is 5.50. That will not cut it in Queens and the fans will let you know. Hopefully, he can turn things around. |
23 | Cincinnati Reds
(previously: 20) |
19-28 | Elly De La Cruz is on pace to have over 100 steals this season. The Reds are not winning games, but he is electric and must-watch television. |
24 | St. Louis Cardinals
(previously: 26) |
20-26 | Paul Goldschmidt is only batting .214, and Nolan Gorman is at .200. If they could pick things up, the Cardinals have a legitimate chance of making the playoffs. |
25 | Washington Nationals
(previously: 19) |
20-25 | The Nationals are 2.5 games back of the wild card but just lost two games to the White Sox. They must win those games if they want to see the postseason. |
26 | Oakland Athletics
(previously: 23) |
19-30 | The A’s have lost nine of their last 10 games, but they had an exciting couple of weeks! |
27 | Los Angeles Angels
(previously: 27) |
18-29 | The Angels could probably be above the A’s in this list, as they have a run differential of -30 compared to -60 for the A’s. They are not turning that into wins, though. |
28 | Colorado Rockies
(previously: 28) |
15-31 | The Rockies are no longer the worst team on the road this season at 6-19. The White Sox somehow are even worse at 4-19. |
29 | Miami Marlins
(previously: 30) |
15-33 | The Marlins had a week at the bottom of the league but strung together four consecutive wins last week. |
30 | Chicago White Sox
(previously: 29) |
14-33 | The White Sox are back in their rightful spot as the worst in the league. The -99 run differential and 4-19 road record sums it up. |
