Thoughts |
1 | Philadelphia Phillies
(previously: 3) |
28-13 | What slow start? They are a thing of the past, as this year’s team is starting on the right foot. They may even win the division over the Braves this season. They are top four in batting average and ERA. |
2 | Baltimore Orioles
(previously: 2) |
26-13 | The Orioles would probably be in the top spot if not for Craig Kimbrel blowing three saves and owning a 4.11 ERA. This young ballclub is fun to watch. |
3 | Los Angeles Dodgers
(previously: 1) |
27-15 | The Dodgers are 8-2 in their last 10, but those two came in their most recent series against the Padres. They should cruise over the Giants and Reds this week. |
4 | Atlanta Braves
(previously: 4) |
24-13 | The Phillies may own the division currently, but the Braves will be breathing down their neck all season. Ronald Acuna Jr. is only batting .252 with six XBH. The reigning MVP will surely step it up as the season progresses. |
5 | New York Yankees
(previously: 5) |
27-15 | Aaron Judge officially reached double-digit (10) home runs this week, and we are finally seeing the 1-2 punch of Soto and Judge pay off. DJ LeMahieu may be the lead-off the Yankees need once he is healthy. |
6 | Cleveland Guardians
(previously: 6) |
25-16 | The Guardians dropped three out of four to the White Sox, and the bats have cooled off. They have slipped into the bottom third of the league in batting average. They have the Rangers and Twins this week. |
7 | Minnesota Twins
(previously: 13) |
24-16 | Speaking of the Twins, they have been on an impressive run. They are 7-3 in their last 10 and on a 17-3 run. They face the Yankees and Guardians this week and could get Byron Buxton back. |
8 | Kansas City Royals
(previously: 7) |
25-17 | The Royals are a solid team playing in a tough division. They are tied with the Twins, only a half-game back of the Guardians, with the Tigers lurking 4.5 games back. The Royals +49 run differential is the best of the bunch. |
9 | Chicago Cubs
(previously: 9) |
24-17 | Shota Imanaga is still far exceeding expectations. He tossed seven innings, gave up two earned runs against the Padres, and fanned eight batters. He will face the Braves on Monday. |
10 | Milwaukee Brewers
(previously: 8) |
24-16 | Between Christian Yelich and Williams Contreras, it is hard to tell who is hotter. Yelich returned from injury and picked up right where he left off (.364), and Contreras is batting .346. |
11 | Texas Rangers
(previously: 10) |
22-20 | The Rangers just got swept by the Rockies at Coors Field. They only scored six runs, which is concerning, but they are still a top-five team in batting average. |
12 | Seattle Mariners
(previously: 12) |
22-19 | Julio Rodriguez may be back after hitting his second home run. He is making better contact and hitting the ball hard, which should turn into hits. |
13 | San Diego Padres
(previously: 15) |
22-21 | The Padres have won seven of their last 10 and just took a series against the Dodgers. They are still 5.5 games back, but that was a big series moving forward. |
14 | Boston Red Sox
(previously: 11) |
21-19 | The Red Sox still own the best ERA (2.75) in the league and by a large margin. They have the pitching staff to compete for a wild card spot, especially if their young bats get going. |
15 | Detroit Tigers
(previously: 14) |
20-20 | Spencer Torkelson finally shook the slump and hit a home run this season. They are 3-7 in their last 10 and need Torkelson to turn things around to compete in the tough AL Central. |
16 | Tampa Bay Rays
(previously: 19) |
20-21 | They have a big stretch coming up this week. They face the Red Sox seven times and the Blue Jays three times in their next 10 games, which will be important for their wildcard hopes. |
17 | Arizona Diamondbacks
(previously: 18) |
19-22 | The Diamondbacks cannot get over .500, but Corbin Carroll is starting to turn things around. If he gets going, they will start seeing more victories. |
18 | New York Mets
(previously: 17) |
19-20 | The Mets are staying around the .500 mark but could get set back this week. They have a four-game series with the Phillies before facing the Marlins through the weekend. |
19 | Washington Nationals
(previously: 21) |
19-20 | The Nationals have come a long way from the last two seasons. They are competing in games, and this has to do with their pitching staff. |
20 | Cincinnati Reds
(previously: 16) |
17-23 | The Reds are 1-9 in their last 10 and have fallen behind the Pirates in the division. They are a young team, so consistency is not a given.  |
21 | Toronto Blue Jays
(previously: 20) |
18-22 | The Blue Jays are trending in the wrong direction going into a three-game road trip to Baltimore. They need to steal at least one before facing the Rays. |
22 | San Francisco Giants
(previously: 24) |
19-23 | The offseason additions are not going as planned, but LaMonte Wade Jr. is a bright spot. He is batting .340 and .457 slugging. |
23 | Oakland Athletics
(previously: 22) |
19-23 | The A’s have cooled off a bit from last week but are still well above where they started the season. |
24 | Pittsburgh Pirates
(previously: 23) |
18-23 | Paul Skenes debuted and fanned seven batters against the Cubs at home. He did not get his first win, but seven strikeouts through four innings is not a bad way to start your career. |
25 | Houston Astros
(previously: 26) |
15-25 | Believe it or not, the Astros own the highest team batting average (.262) in the league. It has not been enough to eclipse their third-worst ERA (4.96), but they are not out of the division yet. |
26 | St. Louis Cardinals
(previously: 25) |
16-24 | Paul Goldschmidt needs to pick it up, especially after Willson Contreras suffered a broken arm. |
27 | Los Angeles Angels
(previously: 27) |
15-26 | Jo Adell is starting to prove his high draft pick worthy. He has seven home runs and seven stolen bases. |
28 | Colorado Rockies
(previously: 29) |
12-28 | The Rockies swept the Rangers to get them to 12 wins on the year.  |
29 | Chicago White Sox
(previously: 30) |
12-29 | Three out of four against the Guardians is about as good as it gets for the White Sox. They finally moved out of last place, too! |
30 | Miami Marlins
(previously: 28) |
11-31 | The Marlins claim the bottom spot in the power rankings and team ERA (5.27). |
