Thoughts |
1 | New York Yankees
(previously: 1) |
50-24 | Gerrit Cole is returning this Wednesday against Baltimore in front of the home fans. He will join the league’s only 50-win team and lowest team ERA (3.02). The two series against Baltimore and Atlanta are big ones for the Yankees to show the league they are the real deal. |
2 | Philadelphia Phillies
(previously: 2) |
47-24 | Trea Turner is due back this week after missing six weeks with a hamstring strain. Edmundo Sosa more than helped fill the void left by Turner, batting .277 with a 1.9 WAR. |
3 | Baltimore Orioles
(previously: 4) |
47-24 | The Orioles have 114 home runs this season, which leads the league. They also have the second-best ERA (3.07) in baseball. The AL East may have the two best teams in the AL and is not close. |
4 | Los Angeles Dodgers
(previously: 3) |
44-29 | Yoshinobu Yamamoto was placed on the 15-day IL with a rotator cuff strain. Mookie Betts also left Sunday’s game after getting hit in the left hand by a pitch, which fractured his hand. The injury bug is hitting the Dodgers. |
5 | Cleveland Guardians
(previously: 5) |
44-25 | The Guardians have lengthened their lead to five games in the AL Central. Jose Ramirez is the undoubted leader of this ball club, but Steven Kwan is putting up eye-popping numbers. He is batting .398, 1.002 OPS, and a 2.7 WAR in 43 games played this season.  |
6 | Milwaukee Brewers
(previously: 7) |
42-29 | They have a 6.5-game lead in the NL Central and are statistically one of the better teams in the league. They are fourth in batting average (.254) and eighth in ERA (3.72). |
7 | Seattle Mariners
(previously: 9) |
43-31 | The Mariners are starting to run away with their division. They have an 8.5-game lead over the Rangers despite having the third-worst batting average (.221) as a team. |
8 | Kansas City Royals
(previously: 6) |
41-32 | The Royals are 4-6 in their last 10 games, but seven were against the Dodgers and Yankees. Bobby Witt Jr. leads the league with a .327 average and fourth with 21 stolen bases. |
9 | Atlanta Braves
(previously: 8) |
38-31 | Marcell Ozuna leads the team with 20 home runs, and the only other player with double digits is Matt Olson (11). The Braves are not knocking the ball out of the park this season, but they were this past weekend, which could be a sign of things to come. |
10 | Minnesota Twins
(previously: 10) |
40-32 | Royce Lewis is a different level of power hitter. He has seven home runs in 12 games. Seven of his 16 hits this season have left the park. The Twins are happy he is back from injury. |
11 | Boston Red Sox
(previously: 12) |
37-35 | The Red Sox had a big week. They took two out of three against the Phillies and Yankees and showed the league they are not to be reckoned with. |
12 | San Diego Padres
(previously: 11) |
37-38 | The Mets just swept the Padres, and they are now one game below .500. Manny Machado is batting .245 this season with six home runs. The Padres need him to pick it up in the second half of the season. |
13 | St. Louis Cardinals
(previously: 21) |
35-35 | The Cardinals have turned things around recently. They are back at .500 and have a good chance of adding more wins against the Marlins this week. |
14 | Toronto Blue Jays
(previously: 18) |
35-36 | There is a vital stretch of the schedule upcoming for the Blue Jays. They have two series against the Red Sox, with a trip to Cleveland in between. |
15 | San Francisco Giants
(previously: 13) |
35-37 | No player on the Giants has double-digit home runs. That could be cause for concern, especially for Jorge Soler and Matt Chapman. |
16 | Cincinnati Reds
(previously: 16) |
34-37 | Another reminder that Elly De La Cruz is leading the league in stolen bases by 10 at 36. He is only batting .235 this season but still has a 2.0 WAR. He is a special talent at 22 years old. |
17 | Arizona Diamondbacks
(previously: 22) |
35-37 | Corbin Carroll will undergo an MRI on Monday to examine his left side, where he was experiencing discomfort. He was starting to get things going with a .273 batting average in June.  |
18 | Detroit Tigers
(previously: 14) |
34-37 | The Tigers are 3-7 in their last 10 games and are 5.5 games back for the last wild card spot. They face the Braves and Phillies with a homestand against the White Sox in the middle. |
19 | Texas Rangers
(previously: 15) |
33-38 | Max Scherzer may return sometime as soon as this week. The team could use him as they have fallen far from their World Series victory last season. |
20 | Washington Nationals
(previously: 24) |
35-36 | The Nationals continue to surprise the league. They are 8-2 in the last 10 and are pushing toward .500. The Nats play the Diamondbacks and Rockies this week. |
21 | Chicago Cubs
(previously: 19) |
34-38 | The Cubs have been struggling for the past month and a half. They own the fourth-lowest batting average (.226) and are not getting production from their stars. |
22 | Houston Astros
(previously: 17) |
33-39 | Time is running out for the Astros. They are seven games back of the last wild card spot and nine games back in the division. |
23 | Pittsburgh Pirates
(previously: 20) |
34-37 | This Pirates team is fun again. Andrew McCutchen has brought back his fun energy to this team, and the young pitching has rejuvenated this ball club. If you have never been to PNC Park, it is well worth the trip. |
24 | Tampa Bay Rays
(previously: 23) |
34-38 | The bottom of the AL East is not an awful place because they are the best division in baseball. The Rays do not have the offense to compete with them. |
25 | New York Mets
(previously: 25) |
33-37 | The Mets are hot right now. They are 8-2 in their last 10 games and only 1.5 games out of the wild card. They may not be sellers after all. |
26 | Los Angeles Angels
(previously: 27) |
28-43 | Logan O’Hoppe is turning into one of the premier young catchers in the league. He is batting .405 in June and .281 overall. |
27 | Colorado Rockies
(previously: 28) |
25-46 | The Rockies have improved their record on the road (11-27) but still have a -111 run differential. |
28 | Oakland Athletics
(previously: 26) |
26-48 | 1-9 in their last 10 games drops them even farther down the list this week. |
29 | Miami Marlins
(previously: 29) |
23-48 | The Marlins have some interesting trade pieces, including Josh Bell, who could help a team looking to make the postseason.  |
30 | Chicago White Sox
(previously: 30) |
19-54 | The White Sox are 7-31 on the road this season and are the only team without 20 or more wins. |
