Thoughts

1 Cleveland Guardians

(previously: 4)

67-44 There is a new sheriff in town. The Guardians have the best record in baseball while playing in the best division in baseball. The AL Central has three teams with 60+ wins. The Guardians deserve the top spot due to their consistency all season.
2 New York Yankees

(previously: 5)

67-46 The slump may be over for the Yankees after they swept the Phillies this week. They went into Philadelphia and took three straight with the help of the newest Yankees, Jazz Chisholm Jr. He is batting .300 with four home runs since joining the team.
3 Philadelphia Phillies

(previously: 1)

66-45 Bryce Harper has been struggling until yesterday. He batted .149 in July with four home runs. He went three for four on Sunday with a home run so he may have broken out of his slump.
4 Baltimore Orioles

(previously: 3)

67-46 Jackson Holliday was called up again at the end of July, and it is going much better than the first time. He has been batting .389 since, with two home runs and seven RBIs.
5 Los Angeles Dodgers

(previously: 2)

65-47 The Dodgers are only up 4.5 games on the Padres and five on the Diamondbacks in the NL West. They play Arizona four times and San Diego three times before the season ends, so we will see if they can fend off two of the hottest teams in the league.
6 Milwaukee Brewers

(previously: 6)

62-49 There may be cause for concern in Milwaukee. They went 12-15 since July and have a tough stretch ahead. They own a 5.5-game lead in the NL Central but play the Braves, Dodgers, and Guardians this month.
7 Minnesota Twins

(previously: 7)

62-48 The Twins are 4.5 games back of the Guardians in the AL Central and have a four-game series at home against them starting on Friday with a doubleheader. It is a big week for them if they want to make a push for the division.
8 San Diego Padres

(previously: 10)

61-52 Injuries have not stopped this team from performing this season. They are 8-2 in their last 10 games and are still without Fernando Tatis Jr., who is expected to return this season, but the timetable is unknown.
9 Kansas City Royals

(previously: 11)

63-50 The Royals are five games back of the division lead in the AL Central and still have seven games remaining against the Guardians and six against the Twins. That division is still up for grabs. Bobby Witt Jr. is one of the best baseball players on the planet and would be winning the MVP if not for Aaron Judge.
10 Atlanta Braves

(previously: 9)

60-51 The Phillies have left the door open for the Braves to make a push for the division, but the Braves answered by losing two straight to the Marlins at home. Jorge Soler is batting .179 since joining the team, which could be an issue.
11 Arizona Diamondbacks

(previously: 13)

60-52 The Diamondbacks are on an impressive run since the All-Star break. They are 11-4 since returning and own the final wild-card spot. It is reminiscent of last season when they squeaked into the postseason and won the NL pennant.
12 Houston Astros

(previously: 8)

57-54 Last week was a tough week for the Astros. They nearly got swept by the Pirates and lost two of three against the Rays. They are one game back of the Mariners for the division.
13 Boston Red Sox

(previously: 12)

59-51 The Red Sox need to push for the wild card and have a chance to close the 2.5-game gap this week. They play the Royals this week and could take over the final wild card with three wins.
14 Seattle Mariners

(previously: 14)

59-54 The Mariners took a series from the Phillies last week and could build momentum against the Tigers and Mets this week before playing the Tigers again next week.
15 New York Mets

(previously: 15)

58-53 The final playoff spot is within reach for the Mets, but they must play better than they have been. Dropping two out of three to the Angels is not an ideal start to August.
16 Pittsburgh Pirates

(previously: 16)

56-55 The Pirates are 3.5 games out of the final playoff spot and have a difficult schedule ahead. They play the Padres in two series, with a series against the Dodgers in between.
17 San Francisco Giants

(previously: 20)

56-57 The pitching staff had a hell of a week. Blake Snell threw a no-hitter on Friday against the Reds on 114 pitches. He finished with 11 strikeouts and three walks. The day before, Logan Webb pitched a shutout on 106 pitches against the A’s.
18 St. Louis Cardinals

(previously: 17)

57-55 There is hope for the Cardinals, who are 5.5 gamers behind the Brewers in the division with six games remaining against them. They are also three games back of the final wild-card spot.
19 Tampa Bay Rays

(previously: 18)

57-54 The Rays may have been sellers at the deadline, but they have a shot at making the playoffs. They are five games back in the wild card but have a difficult schedule to finish the season.
20 Chicago Cubs

(previously: 23)

55-59 Things are bleak for the Cubs, but they are 6-4 in their last 10 games. They also have a 0-run differential, which is neat.
21 Cincinnati Reds

(previously: 22)

53-58 The Reds got no hit last week, but Elly De La Cruz is still on pace for 80 stolen bases. The MLB has not seen a player reach that mark since 1988.
22 Texas Rangers

(previously: 19)

53-59 The most disappointing team in the league this season has been the Rangers. They cannot sustain a long win stretch and have barely been above .500 this season.
23 Detroit Tigers

(previously: 21)

53-60 The Tigers are 3-7 in their last 10 games, and there is little to cheer for as they get beat up by their division.
24 Toronto Blue Jays

(previously: 24)

51-61 Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been hot after a slow start. He finished July with a .358 average and eight home runs with 20 RBIs.
25 Washington Nationals

(previously: 25)

51-61 The Nationals had a rough month of July, going 10-16 and dashing their slim chances of making the playoffs.
26 Los Angeles Angels

(previously: 27)

49-63 Mike Trout will not be returning for the Angels. That is terrible news for the league; good news if you want cheap tickets.
27 Oakland Athletics

(previously: 26)

46-67 The A’s are still fourth in the league with 146 home runs. They also went 15-9 in July. They are a young team with lots of talent. It might be worth keeping an eye on their moves this offseason.
28 Miami Marlins

(previously: 28)

42-70 The Marlins are trying their hardest to win meaningless games that can hurt their opponents. They won two out of four against the Braves last week.
29 Colorado Rockies

(previously: 29)

41-72 Things could be worse for the Rockies. They could be the White Sox.
30 Chicago White Sox

(previously: 30)

27-87 They have lost 20 straight games, and their road record is 10-47. Atrocious.
