1 |
Philadelphia Phillies
(previously: 3) |
73-51 | The Phillies have the best record in the league by a half-game, and six teams are within one game of the best record. Westin Wilson, a 29-year-old rookie, hit for the cycle last week, which is a great story for a guy who spent so much time in the Minors. |
2 | New York Yankees
(previously: 1) |
73-52 | It was a tough week for the Yankees. They lost to the White Sox by 10 and two out of three to the Tigers. Clay Holmes also blew another save on Sunday Night Baseball, which makes 10 on the season. |
3 | Baltimore Orioles
(previously: 2) |
73-52 | Gunnar Henderson has four home runs in five games and is starting to come back to life. He hit .276 in July with only two home runs but is up to .308 in August with five home runs. |
4 | Los Angeles Dodgers
(previously: 5) |
73-52 | Shohei Ohtani has not pitched an inning this season and is -3000 to win the NL MVP on DraftKings. He has 39 home runs, 37 stolen bases, 6.1 WAR, and is batting .290. He is a generational talent and can be better when on the mound every fifth day. |
5 | Cleveland Guardians
(previously: 4) |
72-52 | The Guardians were a model of consistency for the first half of the season but have been on a rollercoaster stretch as of late. They went 13-12 in July and 7-10 in August. Their lead in the division has dwindled to just two games. |
6 | Milwaukee Brewers
(previously: 6) |
72-52 | The NL Central is theirs with an 11-game lead, but they continue to win games. They are 7-3 in their last 10 games, all without Christian Yelich. |
7 | San Diego Padres
(previously: 7) |
70-55 | The Rockies took two out of three against the Padres last week, which is a bummer for Padres fans. They are only three games back from the Dodgers, and they lost two to one of the worst teams in the league. |
8 | Minnesota Twins
(previously: 8) |
70-54 | The Twins are good and are having a good month. They are 11-6 this month and only two games back of the Guardians for the lead in the division. |
9 | Houston Astros
(previously: 11) |
67-56 | The Astros are 9-1 in their last 10 games and have a four-game lead in the division. They have fought hard to get here after starting 10-19 to start the season. |
10 | Arizona Diamondbacks
(previously: 9) |
69-56 | The NL West is holding on to the first two wild cards, but the gap between the Diamondbacks and Dodgers is closing. They are only up four games, and getting swept by the Rays did not help. They have gone 28-13 since the beginning of July and are probably the hottest teams in the league. |
11 | Kansas City Royals
(previously: 10) |
69-55 | The remaining schedule for the Royals is the toughest in the league, but luckily, they have a 3.5-game lead over the Red Sox in the wild card. They are three games back of the Guardians for the division, but it will be tough with the Twins between them. |
12 | Atlanta Braves
(previously: 13) |
66-58 | They own the last wild card spot by two games, but they have seven games against the Phillies between now and September 1. The Braves are starting to turn the corner despite all the injuries. |
13 | Boston Red Sox
(previously: 14) |
65-58 | Playoff hopes are slipping away from the Red Sox, who are 3.5 games out of the wild card. Rafael Devers is having a down month, only batting .258 with three home runs. |
14 | New York Mets
(previously: 15) |
64-60 | The Mets are only two games back of the Braves for the final wild-card spot, and they did themselves no favors last week. They went 3-3 against the A’s and Marlins. They play the Orioles, Padres, and Diamondbacks over the next three series. |
15 | Seattle Mariners
(previously: 12) |
64-61 | The Mariners shot themselves in the foot last week. They had a road trip to Detroit, where they got swept, and one to Pittsburgh, where they lost the first two. They are now four games back in the division. |
16 | San Francisco Giants
(previously: 16) |
63-63 | Blake Snell is showing why he was such a coveted free agent. He had a 0.75 ERA in four starts in July and 1.27 in four starts in August. He also has 70 strikeouts in 52.1 innings in that timeframe. |
17 | Tampa Bay Rays
(previously: 18) |
62-61 | The Rays have little to play for right now, but they still technically have a chance to make the playoffs. They are getting a look at their farm system by recalling Junior Caminero, who is six for 18 in five games. |
18 | St. Louis Cardinals
(previously: 17) |
61-63 | Trouble is looming in St. Louis. They are 3-7 in their last 10 games and are five games back of the wild card. The offseason will be interesting for them with all their big-name players. |
19 | Chicago Cubs
(previously: 19) |
61-64 | Isaac Paredes is batting .153 with two home runs since joining the Cubs. Christopher Morel is batting .148 with two home runs with the Rays. Time will tell which team won that trade. |
20 | Detroit Tigers
(previously: 23) |
61-64 | The Tigers had a great week after sweeping the Mariners and taking two against the Yankees, including a walk-off victory in front of the Little Leaguers. |
21 | Cincinnati Reds
(previously: 21) |
60-64 | Hunter Greene hit the 15-day IL with an elbow injury, a major blow to his Cy Young chances. In other news, Elly De La Cruz has 59 stolen bases. |
22 | Texas Rangers
(previously: 22) |
57-68 | The Rangers are still sitting below .500 and have little chance to make the playoffs. What a disappointing way to follow up a World Series win. |
23 | Pittsburgh Pirates
(previously: 20) |
58-65 | The Pirates are 2-8 in their last 10 games and have dashed their hopes of securing the wild card. Paul Skenes is third in NL Cy Young odds and -175 to win NL ROY, with Jackson Merrill closing the gap. |
24 | Toronto Blue Jays
(previously: 25) |
58-66 | Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is having a phenomenal season, batting .317 with 25 home runs and a 4.5 WAR. |
25 | Washington Nationals
(previously: 24) |
56-69 | 21-year-old James Wood is having an incredible month. He is batting .351 with three home runs and 12 RBIs. |
26 | Oakland Athletics
(previously: 27) |
53-71 | The A’s have fallen on the home run list this past week. They now sit tied for seventh with 154 home runs. I may be looking too far in the future, but the A’s could be sneaky good next season. |
27 | Los Angeles Angels
(previously: 26) |
53-71 | Several young players make you excited for the future. Logan O’Hoppe and Zach Neto could help Mike Trout when he returns next season. |
28 | Colorado Rockies
(previously: 28) |
46-79 | The Rockies retired Todd Helton’s number on Saturday, which is well-deserved for the Hall of Famer and leader in most Rockies’ categories. |
29 | Miami Marlins
(previously: 29) |
46-78 | Jake Burger is batting .333 in August with nine home runs. He has 17 home runs since July and is carrying the Marlins’ offense. |
30 | Chicago White Sox
(previously: 30) |
30-95 | The White Sox have officially become the first team eliminated from playoff contention. No real surprises here. They are 12-51 on the road this season. |
