LIVERPOOL VS. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR EXPERT PICK – APRIL 30th, 2023 – Somebody get me some oxygen because I am definitely going to need it after this game.

Liverpool welcome Tottenham Hotspur to fortress Anfield this Sunday in this huge battle for European Qualification. History has been on Liverpool’s side in this fixture and Tottenham have not beaten Liverpool since 2020.

However, currently these two teams are only separated by a single point and a win for either team could be pivotal in their march for top 6…or even top 4.

Top 4

Yep, I said it. Top 4. I still believe Liverpool have a chance at top 4. Is it likely? No. Do they need to WIN every single game from here on out? Yes.

If Liverpool win their remaining 6 games it will put them at 71 points and history shows that 71 points is typically good enough to get you into Champions League. Will they have what it takes to do what Manchester United couldn’t and outlast Tottenham? We’ll find out on Sunday.

LIVERPOOL

Liverpool are currently in 7th place in the Premier League table and have shown signs of improvement as they try to salvage what has been a bad season to their standards. They are currently on a 5 game unbeaten streak and most recently showed resilience as they outlasted West Ham United 2-1 in a game where they honestly were by far the superior team.

In that match, Liverpool had 72% possession and 20 shots on goal. Liverpool’s fixtures as of late have had plenty of action in front of goal. Their previous 4 games have seen a total of 19 goals with 13 of them being for Liverpool.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Tottenham are currently sitting in 5th place in the Premier League table but have been far from their best this season. They did show a fighting spirit at home in their last match where they salvaged a point after being down 2-0 to Manchester United to end the game in a 2-2 draw.

Tottenham have had plenty of ups and downs this season both on and off the pitch and they were 1 Manchester United goal away from being in a very dark place as a club. But, somehow they avoided the darkness.

If you happened to watch that game, it was clear in the first half that the Tottenham players just had no confidence.

They were walking around the pitch with their heads down, didn’t seem upset when they were scored on, and other than Harry Kane they appear to not have a leader on the field.

Yet somehow they find themselves near the top of the table with a shot at top 4…but they’ll have to win at Anfield if they want to keep those hopes alive.

PROP BETS

| Both Teams to Score Yes & Over 2.5 Goals (-130) |

Both of these teams have high-powered offenses and both are capable of scoring plenty of goals. Four of the last five meetings between these two sides have produced at least 3 goals, 6 of Tottenham’s last 7 Premier League games have produced over 2.5 goals, and 5 of Liverpool’s last 6 games have produced over 2.5 goals.

Liverpool are currently unbeaten in 5 games and have scored a total of 13 goals during that span.

They have looked much better on the attacking side of the ball since moving Trent Alexander-Arnold to his hybrid position, but this position makes Liverpool very vulnerable to counter-attacks and Tottenham have made their name as one of the best counter-attacking teams in the Premier League. There will be goals.

| Mohamed Salah to Score Anytime (+100) |

Mohamed Salah has not necessarily had his best season in front of goal, but he is still the team’s leading goalscorer. In Liverpool’s last 6 Premier League games in which they’ve scored, Mohamed Salah has scored a goal in 5 of those games. The Egyptian loves playing against Tottenham and scored both of Liverpool’s goals in their 2-1 win against Tottenham earlier this season.

TIPS

  • Liverpool will be without Stefan Bajcetic, Naby Keita, and Roberto Firmino this Sunday.
  • Tottenham will be without Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur and Emerson Royal, while Ryan Sessegnon and Hugo Lloris are both doubtful.
  • Liverpool have an 88W-44D-48L record in 180 matches against Tottenham.
  • Liverpool have only lost 1 of their previous 20 Premier League games against Tottenham and are unbeaten in this fixture since 2017.
  • Liverpool have only lost 1 game at Anfield this season out of a total of 15 home games.
  • Tottenham are winless in their previous 6 away games.

THE WORD

Yes, Tottenham were able to bounce back from their beatdown against Newcastle by salvaging a point against Manchester United, but a trip to Anfield is likely to be a problem. Both teams have been extremely inconsistent this season, with the only constant being their struggles away from home.

Tottenham’s defensive struggles continue and they have conceded a goal in 8 straight Premier League matches. Liverpool have also been leaky in the back this season but have proven to be much better at home.

I will not be surprised to see the net ripple several times this Sunday as both sides retain ambitions of sneaking into the top 4, but Tottenham have not won at Anfield since 2011 and I think this will be a river too wide for Tottenham, whose poor away form looks likely to continue.
