Inside the WNBA’s Plans for Expansion

INSIDE THE WNBA’S PLANS FOR EXPANSION – Much hype has been built into the kickoff of the 28th WNBA season. This season features rookies who have amassed significant notoriety as college basketball players due to name, image, and likeness opportunities.

The WNBA’s season opener between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun did not disappoint. It ultimately became the most-watched WNBA game on ESPN’s broadcast, averaging 2.1 million viewers. Even the WNBA Countdown has seen a dramatic spike in viewership. 

The Clark Effect

A key component to the excitement around the WNBA is attributed to the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark. The Caitlin Clark Effect is alive and well in the WNBA. The New York Liberty broke a single-game ticket record when the Fever came to Brooklyn, selling over two million tickets. The Indiana Fever’s future matchups against the Atlanta Dream and Las Vegas Aces are being moved to bigger arenas, showcasing women’s basketball’s growing demand and popularity. 

The Fever’s games against the Dream will be placed in State Farm Arena, where the Atlanta Hawks play. Furthermore, when the Fever and Caitlin Clark come to Sin City to play the Las Vegas Aces, their game will be moved to T-Mobile Arena. T-Mobile Arena has featured NBA events such as NBA Summer League games and In-Season tournaments. This shift to larger venues underscores the increased interest and engagement in the WNBA. 

Adding to the momentum, the WNBA is also entering an era of expansion; the league recently announced a new team, the Golden State Valkyries, which will play in 2025. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said before the 2024 WNBA season.

“Our plan is to get to 16 teams in the next few years.” The league also shared news of Toronto receiving a team in 2026. These expansion teams will provide more opportunities for talented players to participate in the league’s growth.

Charter Flights

Another initiative is the WNBA’s charter flights program, which will begin on Tuesday, May 21st. All teams will be flying charter except for shorter trips from Chicago to Indiana or between Connecticut and New York, which would instead be chartered bus rides. Before this, teams typically flew on commercial flights.

Chartered flights were boarded sparingly for tournament-style back-to-back games in the playoffs or the Commissioners Cup. Players have expressed discontent with commercial flights in the past; an incident took place in 2022 when WNBA Players Association president Nneka Ogwumike, along with her Los Angeles Sparks teammates at the time, was stuck in an airport overnight while traveling in between games.

Some players had to sleep in the airport while others could find hotel rooms. Since the incident, players have challenged the league to find solutions and implement a charter flight program. The WNBA’s new charter flights program will cost the league 25 million dollars. 

Las Vegas Bonuses

In a notable move, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority invested $100,000 in each player of the Las Vegas Aces to demonstrate its commitment to women’s sports. What better way to amplify the social and cultural value of women’s basketball players than a $100,000 sponsorship for each player? Yet, despite this significant gesture, the league is investigating the move, raising questions about compliance and the impact on competitive balance.  

The excitement surrounding the 28th WNBA season is palpable, with significant investments and initiatives signaling a bright future for the league.

The WNBA is poised for unprecedented growth, from increased viewership and ticket sales driven by star players like Caitlin Clark to strategic expansion into new markets. Introducing charter flights for teams marks a critical step towards improving player welfare and operational efficiency, addressing long-standing concerns, and enhancing the overall professional experience for athletes.
