Detroit Lions vs. Tennessee Titans — In-Season Stats & Betting Trends
Following a 20-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2, the Lions have reeled off four straight wins, including a 31-29 victory over the Minnesota Vikings last week. Jared Goff continued his stellar play, as he threw for 280 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. This marked the third straight outing in which he posted a passer rating of at least 140, becoming just the fourth QB in NFL history to accomplish this impressive feat. The other three are Roger Staubach (1971), Kurt Warner (1999), and Aaron Rodgers (2011).
Jahmyr Gibbs led the ground game with 116 yards and two scores on 15 carries. Amon-Ra St. Brown had eight receptions totaling 112 yards and one score for a Lions’ offense that has looked virtually unstoppable over the past several weeks.
Meanwhile, the Titans have struggled this season, to put it nicely. They have dropped five of their first six games and enter this interconference tilt with back-to-back losses against the Indianapolis Colts (20-17) and the Buffalo Bills (34-10). In the blowout loss against Buffalo, the Titans led by a slim 10-7 margin at the break. Unfortunately, the offense failed to score in the second half, while the defense gave up 27 points. Here is Brian Callahan’s assessment of his team’s second-half collapse.
“We went backwards on offense. We had penalties, we had a million issues, quarterback hits, all those things. Not good enough,” Callahan said via ESPN. “We didn’t do a good enough job to do anything in the second half worthwhile. It’s frustrating. Got to find an answer.”
Detroit’s Offense vs. Tennessee’s Defense
Surprisingly, Tennessee’s defense is better than its record indicates. This unit is ranked first in total yards allowed per game (272.3), third in passing yards allowed (166.7), and seventh in rushing yards allowed per contest (105.5). Unfortunately, the Lions are a top-five team from an offensive standpoint. And given that they have scored 30 or more points in each of their previous three outings, look for the Lions to coast to an easy victory in this one.
Now that we have set the stage for this matchup, let’s examine the betting trends for both teams.
Hey, make sure you check out our picks on the GW Daily Picks page.
The Spread
Riding the wave of a four-game winning streak, Detroit enters this contest as a huge 11.5-point favorite (per OddsShark.com). This is a huge spread, but here is why backing the Lions to cover is the smart play here.
- The Lions are 7-1 ATS in their previous eight games.
- Detroit is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 matchups against AFC opponents.
- In their previous six October contests, the Lions are 5-1 against the spread.
- The Titans are 1-5 ATS in their last six outings.
- Tennessee has covered the spread in each of its previous five matchups against Detroit.
- In their last 5 October games, the Titans are 1-4 against the spread.
Prediction: Detroit Lions (-11.5)
Over/Under
This matchup’s projected over/under total is 44.5 points (via OddsShark.com). Here are a few factors that suggest why going with the “over” is the intelligent choice.
- The total has gone OVER 12 times in the Lions’ last 18 games.
- The OVER total boasts a 6-3 record in Detroit’s previous nine outings.
- In the Lions’ last five matchups against AFC South opponents, the OVER total has prevailed four times.
- The total has gone OVER four times in the Titans’ last six road contests.
- In Tennessee’s previous six matchups against Detroit, the OVER total has cashed in four times.
Prediction: OVER 44.5 points
Player Prop Bet
Jared Goff is the key player to watch for the Lions. He currently has -115 odds of throwing for more than 236.5 yards and -115 odds of finishing with less than 236.5 yards (via DraftKings). Here’s how his numbers stack up against the projected passing yards total.
- During the season, Goff is averaging 268.3 passing yards per game.
- In one career matchup against the Titans (2017), Goff threw for 301 yards with 4 TDs and zero picks.
- The Lions have played three home games this season. In those contests, Goff is averaging 272 yards per outing.
- In his last three starts, Goff has averaged 295.7 yards per contest, exceeding the projected yards total in every game during that stretch.
Prediction: Jared Goff OVER 236.5 passing yards
