On the Ropes
The Denver Nuggets aren’t used to losing home-court advantage and being down 0-2 in a playoff series. They have been flat out dominated by the Wolves defense and have a few injuries that will make this a tough game to win. Denver comes into the game with starters Jamal Murray (Left Calf Strain), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (Right Abdominal Contusion) and Reggie Jackson (Left Calf Contusion) all questionable to play.
For the Nuggets to have any chance in this game, freshly anointed MVP, Nikola Jokic must dominate. Karl-Anthony Towns for the Wolves has done a great job of pushing Jokic to the three-point line, where he is only 2-for-10 in the series. If “The Joker” can get his game back down to the elbow it will open his elite passing game and provide higher percentage shot chances.
Let’s make no mistake about it, Anthony Edwards for Minnesota has been the star of the playoffs and the series thus far. He is averaging 32.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. Edwards is a legit NBA superstar and will be looking to lead his team to a crushing 3-0 series lead. If he continues to be assisted by Towns with great defense and offense (27 points in game 2) they may be unstoppable.
The Wolves are loaded on defense with Rudy Gobert, who just won his 4th Defensive Player of the Year Award, providing help defense on Mr. MVP, Nikola Jokic.
“Rudy’s driven the defensive culture here. I think it’s a testament to his impact, his presence and what he’s infused into the team of how important defense is and how great it can be when we play it,” Wolves coach Chris Finch said. “That aside, we expect to win no matter who’s with us and who’s not.”
This series could turn on a dime as we will see how the champions respond to being on the ropes.
The Pick
This pick should favor the Minnesota Timberwolves continuing their dominance, winning by way more than 4.5 points in front of a rabid home crowd. This prognosticator should look at the injury report and make the most confident pick in his short Godzilla Wins career. But this “kid” has been following the NBA for three decades.
He knows that the “powers that be” seem to take over and provide us close series and games in this wicked NBA. While almost every metric point to the Wolves dominating this game, there is just this silly hunch that the Nuggets keep it close and win this game. Take the Nuggets with the points and enjoy a great game.
