Chicago Bears vs. Seattle Seahawks — In-Season Stats & Betting Trends

Bears Look To Avoid 10-Game Losing Streak

The Bears continued their losing ways in Week 16 of the NFL season. Their latest setback was a 34-17 loss against the Detroit Lions. Chicago’s offense continued its trend of getting off to slow starts, as this unit didn’t reach the end zone until Detroit had raced out to a 20-0 lead. Sure, the Bears broke a three-game stretch in which they failed to score in the first half. Yep, Caleb Williams had a solid performance, completing 26 of 40 passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns.

It was also his ninth consecutive game without an interception. Defensively, the Bears have seen better days, as the Lions were 7 for 12 on third down and accumulated 475 yards, including 329 through the air. The result was that Chicago dropped its ninth straight game. Given how poorly this team has been playing, that losing skid isn’t likely to end against an opponent needing a win to remain in playoff contention.

Seattle Hopes To Bounce Back From Crushing Loss Against Vikings

Conversely, the Seahawks come into this matchup on a two-game losing skid with back-to-back losses to the Green Bay Packers (30-13) and the Minnesota Vikings (27-24). In the loss against Minnesota, the Seahawks took a 24-20 lead at the 4:41 mark. Unfortunately, the Vikings responded with a touchdown drive less than a minute later, as  Sam Darnold connected with Justin Jefferson for this third touchdown pass of the afternoon. Kicker Jason Myers missed a 60-yard field goal after the two-minute warning.

On Seattle’s final drive, Geno Smith was intercepted by safety Theo Jackson, who preserved the win for the road team. Following their second straight loss to an NFC North team, the Seahawks fell one game behind the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West. Last week, I predicted the Lions would knock off the Bears despite being decimated by injuries on the defensive side of the ball. Although Seattle has dropped two straight, they will bounce back against a Bears squad that has not won a game in over two months.

Now that we have set the stage for this NFC showdown, let’s examine the betting trends for both teams.

Hey, make sure you check out our picks on the GW Daily Picks page.

Bears vs. Seahawks Spread Analysis

On the heels of their ninth straight loss, the Bears come into this contest as a 3.5-point underdog (via OddsShark.com). Let’s see how both teams have fared against the spread.

  • The Bears are 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine games.
  • Chicago is 2-4 ATS in its previous six December outings.
  • The Bears have covered the spread twice in their last seven Thursday home contests.
  • Meanwhile, the Seahawks are 4-2 ATS in their previous six games.

  • In their previous six road matchups against Chicago, the Seahawks are 4-2 against the spread.

Prediction: Seattle Seahawks (-3.5)

Bears vs. Seahawks Over/Under Prediction

The projected scoring total for this matchup opened at 44 points, but the line has moved to 43.5 (via OddsShark.com). Here are a few trends that suggest why going with the “over” is the smart choice.

  • The total has gone OVER five times in the Bears’ last seven home games.
  • The OVER total boasts a 9-2 record in Chicago’s previous 11 matchups against Seattle.
  • The total has gone OVER four times in the Seahawks’ last six road contests against Chicago.
  • The OVER total has prevailed six times in Seattle’s previous seven road outings against the Bears.

Prediction: OVER 43.5 points

Bears vs. Seahawks Player Prop Bet

Coming off a performance where he eclipsed the 300-yard threshold for the fourth time this season, Caleb Williams is this week’s key player to watch for the home team. He currently has -115 odds of finishing with more than 214.5 passing yards and -115 odds of finishing with less than 214.5 yards (via DraftKings). Here’s how his numbers measure up to the projected yards total.

  • During the season, Williams has averaged 218.1 yards per outing.
  • Williams has faced NFC teams 10 times this season. In those contests, he is averaging 229.5 yards per outing.
  • Chicago has played eight home games this season. In those contests, Williams averages 225.6 yards per outing.
  • Over his last five starts, Williams has averaged 251 yards per contest, exceeding the yards total for this matchup three times during that stretch.

Prediction: Caleb Williams OVER 214.5 passing yards
