Packers Seeking 12th Straight Victory Against Woeful Bears

Following a 24-14 loss against the Detroit Lions in early November, the Packers had won five of six heading into their Week 17 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota raced out to a 28-0 lead in the first meeting between these ball clubs before settling for a narrow 31-29 victory. This time, the Vikings led 27-10 after the third quarter before Green Bay trimmed the deficit to two points. But thanks to Sam Darnold, who picked up two key first downs, Minnesota held on for its ninth consecutive victory.

Jordan Love finished 19 of 30 for 185 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, the Packers’ defense surrendered 441 yards, the Vikings’ second-highest total of the season. The bad news is the Packers dropped to 0-5 against the top three teams in the conference. The good news is they have won 11 straight against the Bears, and there’s no reason to believe that this trend will not continue.

Can Chicago End Its Miserable Season On A High Note?

Meanwhile, the Bears are a dumpster fire, and even that may be a generous assessment. Following a 4-2 start, Chicago has dropped its previous 10 contests, including a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Seattle  Seahawks last week. The defense did its job, holding Seattle to 265 yards and just 5-for-13 on third down.

Unfortunately, in what has become a troubling trend for a good chunk of the season, the offense failed to generate enough plays to win a game in which two teams combined for just nine points and 13 punts. On Chicago’s final play of the game at Seattle’s 40-yard line, Caleb Williams was intercepted by Riq Woolen, enabling the Seahawks to escape with a three-point victory. It was his first interception in 353 passing attempts.

Not only has Williams been sacked a league-leading 67 times (including seven against the Seahawks), but this is the second 10-game losing streak during Ryan Poles’ three-year tenure as the general manager. And the fact that fans were screaming “Sell the team” toward the end of the game indicates how disappointing this season has been after a promising start.
