After a trip Down Under, the UFC is headed back to the Apex for their final event of August before taking a weekend off. As usual, the UFC relies on either a heavyweight or middleweight main event to anchor the card, this weekend it is the latter. Also on the card will be The Ultimate Fighter 32 Finale bouts. The main business takes place in the main event with a possible passing-of-the-torch matchup.

Now 1-2 through his UFC career, Tafa is not meeting the expectations of what his brother has set. Tafa is a striker, but as an MMA fighter seems to have many holes in his game. The big hole seems to be his grappling, as he doesn’t have much of a get up game and his takedown defense is also very poor. You can expect decent power from him, as you can with pretty much all heavyweights, but outside of that, there isn’t much to lean on.

It was a rollercoaster debut for Diniz as he got controlled in the first round against Austen Lane before snuffing out all Lane’s takedowns in round two and knocking him out. Diniz comes from a kickboxing background, and you can see how fluid and disciplined he is when he throws. He does not at all chase takedowns, often walking his opponents down and throwing combinations until one eventually wobbles them.

Umar Nurmagomedov is fighting Cory Sandhagen in the main event on Saturday. The winner likely gets a title shot against the winner of Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili. Nurmagomedov is a -340 favorite and has a clear path to victory. He lands 4.51 takedowns per 15 minutes, and Sandhagen only defends 64% of takedowns. Sandhagen is primarily a striker and has not fought a wrestler the level of Nurmagomedov.
What a turn of events it’s been for Ferguson over the last ten years. From being considered the best lightweight on the planet by accruing a 12-fight winning streak, to now people begging you to hang the gloves up after dropping 7-straight fights leading into this weekend. Ferguson often drags his opponents into chaos and beats them there, unfortunately the blueprint is out on how to beat him, and opponents have used it to good effect.

It’s been a long 8 years since the UFC gave England a PPV card. Last time they had one of their own defending as Michael Bisping exacted revenge on Dan Henderson and beat him on the scorecards. This time around, the UFC has both British champions defending against former foes.
