Texas showed it was back last season. Now the Longhorns have to prove that they’re here to stay. There aren’t many better ways to do that than beating the defending national champion on its home turf, and Texas has the pieces needed to do exactly that.
UGA comes in 1-0 after a convincing victory over the offense-less Clemson Tigers. The Dawgs started slow but went on to steamroll the Tigers in the second half behind Carson Beck and freshman phenom Nate Frazier. The defense was suffocating the entire game despite losing star DL Mykel Williams in the second half.Â
The same Nebraska front seven that shoved the Buffaloes around last year is mostly back and a year better. This Husker team is equipped to win in the trenches and isn’t likely to shoot itself in the foot. This year, there’s a good chance that’s good enough for Nebraska to win.
Well, it was close for a half. UGA took a 6-0 lead into halftime, but came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter. Clemson couldn’t keep up, only managing 189 total yards of offense behind Cade Klubnik and Phil Mafah. UGA’s freshmen and transfers stood out in their big win. Let’s break it all down.Â
Over the past 10 meetings, FSU is 9-1, but five of those wins were decided by one score. If the Seminoles haven’t fixed what went wrong in Ireland, this will prove tougher than expected again.
It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t close. And most indicting of all for Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, it was rather predictable.
The only game played on Sunday this week is the Modelo Vegas Kickoff Classic between the Trojans and the Tigers. Both teams are attempting to form a new identity after losing their quarterbacks to the NFL last season. The game will be played in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium, with LSU listed as the home team. Allegiant Stadium is a dome, but it will still be 105 degrees at game time of 7:30 pm. EST on Sunday
Welcome to the Riley Leonard Bowl. A year ago, Leonard and Mike Elko were a quarterback-coach combination looking to make Duke into a top program in the ACC, and they had the Blue Devils ascending until Leonard went down with injury — against Notre Dame, of all teams.
The Wolverines are still very good, but expecting a national championship again would be unfair with just seven starters back. But that’s where new coach Sherrone Moore wants to be judged, and that means he needs to make a statement here, especially with Texas up next.
