2024 Wells Fargo Championship Players to Watch

2024 Wells Fargo Championship Players to Watch

ST LOUIS, Missouri – This week the PGA tour circus heads to Charlotte, North Carolina and an absolutely great track in Quail Hollow. Yes, that Quail Hollow, the one that hosts the famous, or if you played it like I did, infamous Green Mile (that prison reference points to the last 3 holes at Quail, which, if your game is only slightly sketchy, playing it can seem like a life sentence). Read the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship players to watch article below.

Let’s see, this week as compared to last is akin to a tale of two cities. Last week did not host a strong field, nor was it played on an iconic venue. This week we can check both of those boxes. There are only two of the world’s top ranked players (the LIV boys are still in golf limbo ranking wise) missing this week.

Scottie Scheffler, the undisputed best as well as hottest male (Props to our girl Nelly, winner of 5 LPGA events, 1 of them a major, in a row) in the world is still on baby watch.

Ludvig Aberg, whose young face still resembles that of a young baby, has withdrawn with a knee injury. Personally, this is disappointing, especially after his runner up finish in last month’s Masters tournament.

Remember folks, that Masters event was Ludvig’s first top 10 in a major, sparking high hopes as his career takes off.  It should be noted that, as of last summer, when Aberg turned pro, he was ranked 914th. In less than a year he sits at #6 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Let’s also note, ever sarcastically, that the 2024 Masters was also his first major tournament ….EVER!  So, it sucks not to be able to watch him in a major tournament or otherwise.

The Favorites

We know who we are not going to be able to watch, let’s take a look at who we should keep an eye on this week.

Rory McElroy

Rory is obvious. He has won here 3 times, is coming off a W at the Zurich Classic with fellow Irishman Shane Lowery, and he is damn good. There is not much value to his odds, however.

Wyndham Clark

One year ago, he broke through and captured his first PGA Tour title; by 4 strokes, nonetheless. Since he has won twice, one of which was the US Open.  He also has a couple 2nds and a couple 3rds.  He looks like he smells blood in the water every time he tees it up.

Clark is +1800 for the tournament.

Max Homa

My personal favorite player to watch these days.He is not the longest or most skilled, not even close. Max Homa has an entirely different band playing in his head than most tour players.

This is an incredibly grounded and common-sense guy (and we all know common sense is a fossil anymore, should say uncommon sense) who once you hear him interviewed or interact with fans, he wins you over. He talks about kindness, gratitude, and fluffy stuff like that…. Yes, he is a Californian. Yes, he is fantastic.

Obviously, I didn’t climb out on any limbs here. I believe these guys will be around come Sunday and the time the trophy is awarded. So will Xander, JT and probably Morikawa and Fitzpatrick.

Here are few names for you to look at for more value.

Sahith Theegala

Ok I have two late additions to add to your picking options and I would consider these guys to be sleeper or higher value picks.   Both can putt, a strength I love, but their ball-striking has vastly improved and should provide useful this week at Quail.

JT Poston. This guy quietly had 9 top 10 finishes in the last 10 months.  He flies under most radars, is a great rock roller and his recent improvement in his strokes gained approach game has accentuated his middle irons which is perfect for this week. +7000

Sahith Theegala.  I have loved this kid ever since he stepped off the Pepperdine Campus.  This cool cat is finding his own on the PGA Tour. He had a top ten at the Players as well as the WMPO where he has nearly won not to mention 2 2nd and a 6th in the last 5 signature events on tour.  All of the important indicators are trending beautifully for him. +3000

Value Plays

Denny McCarthy, ready to win anytime. Oh yeah, he putts his ass off!

Akshay Bhatia, as close to a home game as he will get, is a great ball striker which Quail requires….. and he is starting to hole more putts.

Sepp Straka, great current form that translates into 4 top 20’s in his last 5 starts with the best being a T5th.

Corey Conners, yes, another Canadian. This man is a walking stripe show and if his putter doesn’t completely no-show, he is likely to make some noise in Charlotte.
